If it takes longer than 6 seconds to appreciate the picture and read the text, try using 2 or more slides to convey the message. You could even use the same picture but with less text on each slide. However put something to show that it is the second part of the bigger message.

  • xiby
xiby said 5 days Edit Delete

Alas I have followed the simple rules as pinpointed but I hardly get more then a handfull of clicks. I know it is not always easy to amalgamate pictures to text and keep it simple, but I feel that 6 secs is far too short to visualize an artistic pic and read text.

Well, it's simply awful and has been emphasized so many times... but in much convincing ways! I would advice you get the (old but still so powerful) manifesto 'Really Bad PowerPoint and how to avoid it' by Seth Godin... much better than this! Or read 'Presentation Zen' by Garr Reynolds, beautiful info compared to that poor design... Sorry!

  • nobullets
nobullets said 11 months Edit Delete

Your slides 1 and 11 are good. The rest are way too busy. What's with this 6x6x6x6 rules? The only rule that applies is there should be NO bullet points - like in your slide 1 and slide 11. For each sldie, you should have a nice photo (not cheesy clip art) that is relevant to a point you are trying to make and a short sentence that addresses the point. You can have 7 words if you wish. Just make sure the font is large enough for the audience to read. Keep the sentence short. You can have as many slides as you need to make your point and you can spend as much time as you need per slide. The PowerPoint police will not arrest you. On some slides, you may spend 4 seconds. On others, much longer. It all depends on the topic of the slide.

Go to www.nobullets.wordpress.com for more practical tips.

Hi Tony, yes, it's Steve. Thanks for your reply.

I don't know about you but I'm finding SlideShare a great source of inspiration: some presentations for their content, some because they are good visual examples, and some because they remind me of what to avoid! My postings have been fairly brief so far, but I will do more. Not being able to use animations means I can't use most of my everyday presentations without adapting them. It's an interesting discipline though!

This is a really useful lesson and well put together, Tony. I particularly like the tip of trying to copy a slide you like as a way of discovering your knowledge gaps.

On slide 11 there is a comment/query about where to find free picture resources. There are actually lots without copyright restrictions. Anyone interested can find them from a listing of free PowerPoint resources (pictures and others) that is available - free, of course - from http://www.perspector.com - see the bottom left of the home page.

Thanks for your question Bhupesh. Many of my stock pictures come from 'www.clipart.com'. I got a free one month subscription when I bought a Hemera clip art collection from Fry's in the USA. I think clipart.com bought over Hemera. I also use Microsoft's collection from their website. As you can see, I am on a low budget.

It would be an easier task in the training room. You simply use the example slide as your background and do a nice trasparent banner with 'find the slide you like'...advance to next slide 'try and reproduce it'...then transition to 'what you cannot...'

However, in this forum, what you have done works.

  • damone
damone said 3 years Edit Delete

Try using the Flickr creative commons. I've found it to be the most useful place to get hi-res images for free. and since it is a social site, you will find amazing pictures of nearly anything you could imagine.

Also, check out a blog called 'Presentation Zen' by Garr Reynolds. Extremely valuable stuff.

  • tosime
tosime said 3 years Edit Delete

Excellent point Damone. How many elements are there on this slide? Basically 3 ideas. Since I am asking my audience to make a comparison, I have to have them on one slide. Is this a justifiable exception to the 6 second rule? Can you show me what you mean?

  • tosime
tosime said 3 years Edit Delete

Thanks for your comments Damone. I looked at over 40 pictures from different sources. I tried about 5. None captured the essence of the concept of 'time to understand' being more important than the concept itself. This is a hard idea to put accross. This MS clipart does it very well I think with the stop watch being so much bigger than the person, while the person is dynamic. Do you have a better picture? Please could you do a one slide makeover for me and upload it. We can discuss it by way of comments.

  • damone
damone said 3 years Edit Delete

Too much on a slide...break this into three slides. Use the example slide as your background. It loses impact because it is crowded.

Thanks djakes. I just copy good people! Double click the object to bring up the format object options. Make sure a color is selected - grey is quite neutral, then select a transparency. I go for 20-50% depending on background and color of object and color of text. Keep adjusting all 3 parameters until you get the effect you want. Most times the line color should be set to no color to keep the object 'light' - as if it were floating. Hope this helps...
