I made a presentation about the following paper: Kim, Woochan and Sung, Taeyoon, "What Makes Firms Manage FX Risk?: Evidence from an Emerging Market" (December 2004). KDI School of Pub Policy & Management Paper No. 05-01. Available at SSRN: http://ssrn.com/abstract=653422 Abstract: We examine a number of factors that determine the decision of firms to manage their foreign exchange risk in an emerging market setting. Using survey data on the foreign exchange risk management practices of 223 non-financial firms in Korea, we find that firm size, a proxy for the cost of hedging, is the dominant factor. Consistent with this finding, we also find that firm size has stronger explanatory power for external methods than for internal methods, which have relatively lower costs. Our results also show that, besides firm size, export revenue is an important factor for Korean firms when hedging foreign exchange risk. We find that this is particularly so for public firms, which are subject to various disclosure requirements, and which thus have more incentive to generate a stable stream of net income. I analysed the international process of Non-governmental organizations (NGOs). As I am very interested in this kind of organizations and already completed several interimships in NGOs, I was eager to apply the international theories to some real-life case studies. I compared the two micro-credit NGOs, Grameen Bank and Accion International, and found out that the social mission of NGOs is the dominate factor regarding internationalisation decisions. However, what is even more surprising, are the managerial implications of this fact and the membership organized structure and the working environment of NGOs. This was actually my presentation during the oral exam in this major. I apply Habermas theory of communicative action to organizational transformation. While communicative action has great advantages as a coordination form, namely high motivation and low coordination costs, this coordination form can be become a major barrier to necessary organizational transformation. As members of the organizations coordinate their actions on a certain paradigm, the aim of the organizational transformation is to change this paradigm in order to secure the survival of the organization. A possible solution to this dilemma is the application of Edgar Scheins’ cultural layers and a distinction into a system and process view of organizational transformation. The presentations uses two case studies (R&D-firm and aviation industry) and empirical evidence to support its evidence. This was actually my presentation during the oral exam in this major. Publication: Academy of Management Journal, Publication Date: 01-FEB-01, Author: SHRADER, RODNEY C. Abstract: This study employed transaction cost theory to explore factors moderating the relationship between collaboration and performance in foreign markets among a sample of international new ventures. Results indicated that R&D intensity and advertising intensity were significant moderators of this relationship; however they were not significantly related to the use or nonuse of collaboration.
