These were the slides used in the Safari Webcast held 12_15_08 from Tokyo. These are *not* meant to be stand alone slides, but many people were asking for the PDF, so here you go. This is the actual PDF I used. Here, however, some of the type colors may be off (though it worked well when uploaded; colors were correct). It is 240 slides because I used a PDF and therefore more slides are used to simulate animation. The PDF was 30 MB uploaded here. There were lagging issues during the webex webcast though I was not aware of them. The archive is better though there are still timing issues. Not really much new here in this deck for longtime followers.

Last night (Oct 4) I was taken to a cool designer hotel room by my wife for what I was told was just a quite dinner. When I opened the door, Surprise!!! All my friends had gathered for a surprise birthday party. At that party my good friend Nathan Bryan gave a great presentation using Keynote slides (connected to a large, beautiful LCD display). These are the slides he used. The slides complemented his talk (I do not know where he got some of those pics). It felt like a roast. One of the best books I have read this year is Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School. The applications for presentation are many. This is a book review of sorts, though I do not highlight all aspects of the book. I focus on the three rules that relate most directly, though all the rules have lessons. Just a fantastic book.

This deck contains slides I have used in live talks that (more or less) are simple and contain quite a bit of empty space. The first set are some before/after examples, followed by a random sample. This deck is not meant to tell a story -- this is just a way to show some random examples. The meaning of the slides may not be at all clear without the narration that goes with the slides.

These are the slides used for Kathy's panel talk at SXSWi in March of ’07. She added a bit more text to make it more useful sans her narration. These were saved as a PDF. I uploaded these to Slideshare to see how the "upload pdf" functions works. This is important for Keynote users since saving your Keynote files to ppt (and then uploading to slideshare) can sometimes mess up your design. Saving to pdf should work better.

These are the 17 slides used by Markuz for the first 30 minutes of his talk. For the last 30 minutes he narrated videos with a musical backdrop (sort of a new-age styled jazz). Out of context the slides may not seem like much, and may seem even cluttered, but in this particular case the visuals worked very, very well. A wonderful, educational, provocative, and inspirational presentation. It used audio, video, graphics, photography, text, but all the while the presenter was front and center and the focus of attention. His talk was a bit like a fireside chat, except the slides were the fire, providing a bit of illumination of a different sort to his talk. One of the best presentations I have ever seen. Just great. The slides were created in Photoshop and displayed with iPhoto. 100% PowerPoint free...now that's a switch.

In a nutshell: Using seismology to understand the ongoing evolution of the mantle beneath northwestern North America. Specifically: I use three well-developed techniques for shear-wave splitting analysis on high quality teleseismic recordings to develop a preliminary model of mantle deformation fabric beneath the Coast Mountain Batholith (CMB) in British Columbia. High quality results show a consistent shear-wave splitting trend of ~1.5 to 2 seconds for the highest signal-to-noise earthquake recorded during the Batholiths Continental Dynamics Experiment seismic deployment. These new observations show a pronounced trend of seismic anisotropy corresponding to an east-west striking fabric superimposed beneath the entire region, crossing several Mesozoic-age terrane boundaries as well as the Cenozoic-age CMB. This trend contrasts with previous work showing null or weak measurements of shear-wave splitting observed elsewhere along the Canadian Cordillera and continental margin. This distinct trend of splitting occurs near the inferred northern edge of the subducted Explorer Plate (Madsen et al., 2006). The anisotropy also strongly mirrors the trend of the 14-0 Ma Anahim Volcanic belt (Souther, 1986). The orientation of splitting coincides with neither the current absolute plate motion of North America, nor the predicted angle of convergence during subduction in the late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic. In addition, the magnitude of the splitting requires a layer of significant seismic anisotropy exceeding 100 km in thickness. These constraints imply that the fabric is a likely to have developed more recently, resides to a significant extent in the asthenosphere, and may relate to a dynamic interaction of the northern edge of the subducted Explorer Plate and the subcontinental mantle of the North American and Pacific Plates.
