RIch...! Mulholland is the founder of South African presentations firm, MISSING LINK. (Check 'em out at http://missinglink.co.za.) They're top of the heap on the continent, creating wildly effective presentations for pretty much most of South Africa's blue chip companies. I've worked with them quite a bit. And they're awesome fun to be around. But their craziness cloaks EXTREME business acumen. These guys are as good as they get. This preso is distilled from a little animation I made for them. It came about thanks to Rich...! appearing on the tv show I'm on every week. I\'m the visual facilitator on CNBC AFRICA's business magazine show, 'Kaleidoscope'. Paul du Toit is one of South Africa's busiest public speakers. As a member of PSASA -- the Professional Speakers Association of Southern Africa -- Paul delivered a one-hour chat to his PSASA cadres at one of the monthly meetings. I was there with my trusty li'l black Moleskine. I sketched Paul. And I took notes. Later, I converted those notes into the seven key points Paul delivered to us. I then animated my sketch of Paul, along with all the requisite speech bubbles. And I got Paul to come along to my place for a recording session. This presentation is the one I use to explain the colours people can choose when they're in a creative brainstorm (or any other problem-analysis session). The system is based on Edward De Bono's Six Thinking Hats. I've changed the colours for logistical reasons. All of the colours in this version are available for laser printers. Which means you can print on them if you like. The way to use this is to have people choose the relevant colour, and act that role. I use this in conjunction with my MAKE A HAT preso. I ask people to make a newspaper hat (around 15 minutes worth of effort, which is fun, and friendly to the brain). They stick little cards in the hat brim to show what mode they're in. You can use any kind of hat that has a place for a piece of card. An easy option is a knitted beanie. Feel free to download the entire preso, and use it for your workshops or brainstorms.

This is one of the components I use when I do brainstorms using SIX CREATIVITY COLOURS FOR BREAKOUT THINKING, based on De Bono's Six Thinking Hats. Basically, you make a hat out of a sheet of newspaper, and use it to stick coloured cards into. The colour you choose is on display to everyone, and allows you to stay in the right mode.

In 2007 I attended a one-day 'Customer Service & Leadership' session, hosted by the Disney Institute. I made my notes on my tablet pc, doing a visual facilitation for myself and my colleagues at Blue Moon. I've isolated the key points in this presentation. Hopefully they're self-explanatory. If not, send me a note, and I'll see if I can clarify. The purpose of a visual facilitation is to concretise people's learning. But it's also to allow that learning to be shared.
