This motivates the exploration of alternative interaction paradigms, different from the \"traditional\" Web or desktop applications ones. The Rhizomer platform is based on the object-action interaction paradigm, which is better suited for heterogeneous resource spaces such as those common in the Semantic Web. Resources, described by means of RDF metadata, correspond to the objects from the interaction point of view and Rhizomer provides browsing mechanisms for them. Semantic web services, dynamically associated to these objects, correspond to the actions. Rhizomer has been applied in the context of a media house to build an audiovisual content management system. End-users of this system, journalists and archivists, are able to navigate the content repository through semantic metadata describing content pieces and the domain knowledge these pieces are referring to. The EU research project LUISA (Learning Content Management System Using Innovative Semantic Web Services Architecture) addresses the development of a reference semantic architecture for the major challenges in the search, interchange and delivery of learning objects in a service-oriented context. One of the key issues, highlighted in this paper, is Digital Rights Management (DRM) interoperability. A Semantic Web approach to copyright management has been followed, which places a Copyright Ontology as the key component for interoperability among existing DRM systems and other licensing schemes like Creative Commons. One of the key issues, highlighted in this paper, is Digital Rights Management (DRM) interoperability. A Semantic Web approach to copyright management has been followed, which places a Copyright Ontology as the key component for interoperability among existing DRM systems and other licensing schemes like Creative Commons. Moreover, Semantic Web tools like reasoners, rule engines and semantic queries facilitate the implementation of an interoperable copyright management component in the LUISA architecture.

Tags: e-learning drm copyright interoperability semantic

</media:text>

Towards an Ontology for Describing Emotions

The appearance of affective computing paradigm has made it possible to include findings from these disciplines in the development of affective interfaces. Still, there is a lack of applications that take emotion related aspects into account. This situation is mainly due to the great amount of proposed theoretical models and the complexity of human emotions. Besides, the importance that mobile computing area is acquiring has made necessary to bear context related aspects in mind. The proposal presented in this paper is based on a generic ontology for describing emotions and their detection and expression systems taking contextual and multimodal elements into account. The ontology is proposed as a way to develop a formal model that can be easily computerized. Moreover, it is based on a standard, the Web Ontology Language (OWL), which also makes ontologies easily shareable and extensible. Once formalized as an ontology, the knowledge about emotions is used in order to make computers more accessible, personalised and adapted to user needs.

Tags: web semantic computing affective emotion

There are many Digital Rights Management (DRM) efforts that facilitate copyright management in closed domains but they find great difficulties when they are forced to interoperate in an open domain like the World Wide Web. In order to facilitate interoperation and automation, DRM systems can be enriched with domain formalisations like the Copyright Ontology. This ontology is implemented using the Description Logic variant of the Web Ontology Language (OWL-DL). This approach facilitates the implementation of efficient usages against licenses checking, which is reduced to description logics classification.

Tags: drm semanticweb semantic web copyright

Facilitating Busines Interoperability from the Semantic Web

However, due to XML expressivity limitations, they are difficult to put into practice because language semantics are not available for computerised means. Therefore, there are many attempts to use formal semantics for B2B based on ontologies. However, this is a difficult jump as there is already a huge XML-based B2B framework and ontology-based approaches lack momentum. Our approach to solve this impasse is based on a di-rect and transparent transfer of existing XML Schemas and XML data to the semantic world. This process is based on a XML Schema to web ontology mapping combined with an XML data to semantic web data one. Once in the semantic space, it is easier to integrate different business standards using ontology alignment tools and to develop business information systems thanks to semantics-aware tools.

Tags: semanticweb ontology b2b integration mapping
