With AGIMO soon to release Web 2.0 guidelines for the Federal Government what impact will this have on the way agencies are likely to conduct their online operations? What role will government play in a Web 2.0 environment? Matthew will look at examples from around Australia and the rest of the world in how governments are starting interact with citizens in online environments. He will draw from his recent experience with a government department in planning and scoping a web 2.0-style project to show how easy it is to move into a government 2.0 world.

Matthew looks at Web 2.0, with a particular focus on how it supports social interaction in knowledge management activities – networking, collaboration and storytelling. He draws on theories and practices from social and organisational psychology to relate why this social revolution is so important for the future of knowledge management. He will demonstrate some of the tools of the modern knowledge worker, the psycho-social factors behind their success, and present how we can leverage them to support best-practice knowledge management within our organisations, with specific references to case studies in government in Canberra, Australia. He also examines elements of a modern KM strategy in the light of these tools to suggest ways in which we can look at strategically about supporting knowledge management in our organisations, rather than tactically.

The world is abuzz with social computing: Facebook, My Space, YouTube, Flickr, Wikipedia, blogs, wikis and other spaces powered by Web 2.0 technology. It’s a social revolution, empowering individuals to communicate, share what they know online, and help others locate information that is important to them in both their private and working lives. Some see all this as a big waste of corporate time, but is it? Is there value in handing over control of collaboration and sharing knowledge to individuals, rather than hoarding it in records systems, knowledge systems, and thousands of network dive folders? Is there a way you can harness this social revolution to help improve our organisation’s knowledge management practices? Is there actually a solid business value proposition for social computing? Matthew will look at knowledge management in modern organisations, and how you can benefit by learning from the principles of social computing and Web 2.0 technologies. Matthew will look at case studies in government that demonstrate successful and not-so-successful ways of employing social computing tools, the factors that contributed to their success, and the pitfalls to watch out for. In particular, he will look at the issues in relation to corporate culture by drawing on recent research in blogs and wikis that is based on the theory and work in organisational psychology by Hofstede.

Often, we forget that we build systems the way the BA, the Systems Architect and the Developer interpret the requirements and not the way that users might envision the system. This means that what we build might not actually be what users want or actually need to help them get their work done. This presentation looks at user-centred design as a way of shifting the focus back toward the user in order to achieve the sweet spot between the business requirements and the user-requirements. It suggests that this process needs to start early, as part of the planning, rather than being left til too late in the process.

English is a messy and chaotic language, with exceptions to rules, different styles of writing, and a multitude of different ways to write about the same thing. This chaos means that analysis, categorisation and building a corporate taxonomy is a very time consuming task, even if it’s just for the navigation of the local intranet- or internet website. This is my presentation at Oz-IA -- about my recent experience in turning ‘scary-bad’ medical restrictions text into something machine-usable. It introduces the concept of Semantic Analysis, the methodology I used to investigate the linguistic patterns in the text, and how this facilitated information classification and codification of content.
