What’s ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot
developed by OpenAI and released in November
2022.
It is built on top of OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4
large language models (LLM).
The language model can answer questions and
assist you with tasks, such as composing emails,
essays, and code.
It’s a proprietary tool (despite the name OpenAI)
What’s ChatGPT?
Two Versions:
Free: ChatGPT3.5 - because OpenAI is in its
research and feedback-collection phase.
Paid: ChatGPT4 (US$20/month) - extra perks
such as general access even at capacity, and
faster response times.
You can access ChatGPT simply by visiting
chat.openai.com and creating an OpenAI
account.
What ChatGPT isn’t + some limitations
The free version ended their
training in 2021. So its
knowledge base ends after that
point. Any new info is either a
made up answer or inference.
Very few cases where it knows about things which
happened since it’s training dates, but those are not
some glitch or a sign of continued “learning” there
are the result of the Kenyan content moderators.
What ChatGPT isn’t + some limitations
Just to be clear, a lot of
comment moderation for social
media and generative AI
projects has been moved to
parts of Africa, especially
Kenya.
Which leads us to the reminder: ChatGPT isn’t AI in
the “knows things and can learn” sense and more in
a “it’s a sponge/filter and can repeat things in a
structured way”.
What ChatGPT isn’t + some limitations
When asked about it’s abilities relative to Bloom’s
Taxonomy ChatGPT itself well tell you that it has
limitations
What ChatGPT isn’t + some limitations
The AI field uses the term “hallucinations” to
describe errors that their generative AI makes.
Example: ChatGPT thinks my house is a converted
three story, block long factory.
Other examples: ChatGPT told a tech writer he was
dead and then sent him a link to an non-existent
BBC article to prove it.
The bigger issue is that it says these things with
utter confidence.

OpenAI Chat Block
This plugin provides a chat block powered by
OpenAI's GPT-3 text completion API, with
customizable AI personality.
This plugin requires a commercial subscription
via a paid OpenAI account ($$)

AIKEN Format
The Aiken format is a very simple way of creating
multiple choice questions using a clear human-readable
format in a text file.
The question must be all on one line. Each answer must
start with a single uppercase letter, followed by a period
'.' or a bracket ')', then a space.
The answer line must immediately follow, starting with
"ANSWER: " (NOTE the space after the colon) and then
giving the appropriate letter.

Moodle XML Format
Multiple Choice questions have one <answer> tag for each choice. Each
choice can carry feedback and score weighting (by using the fraction
attribute). In addition, an MC question has the following tags:
single (values: true/false)
shuffleanswers (values: 1/0)
correctfeedback
partiallycorrectfeedback
incorrectfeedback
answernumbering (allowed values: 'none', 'abc', 'ABCD' or '123')
The <single> tag is used to distinguish single response (radio button) and
multiple response (checkbox) variants.

Some other ways to use
ChatGPT
Cloze tests
You can ask ChatGPT to write you a Cloze test
for a variety of topics.
To achieve the best results you can either ask
it to write the test on general knowledge OR
based on a passage you give it.

ChatGPT
Cloze tests
Designing the Prompt
Using AI tools like ChatGPT effectively
requires designing specific prompts to
achieve desired results.
Non-specific prompts may result in vague and
unsuitable outputs.
Designing the Prompt
“Create a lesson plan that I can use for my B2 level English
learners. The length of the class is 45 minutes. Theme of the
lesson is science. Delivery method is remote teaching via
Zoom. The key teaching approach I want to use is task-based
language teaching. The student interaction format is group
work. My objective for this lesson is to increase the students’
speaking skills. Materials I want to use in this lesson are
videos.”
Create a Lesson Plan
Designing the Prompt
1. Set the stage and provide context
a) How can I prepare for a marathon?
b) I am a beginner runner and have never run a marathon
before, but I want to complete one in six months. How can I
prepare for a marathon?
Tips
Designing the Prompt
2. Tell the AI to assume an identity or profession
a) From the point of view of its product manager, describe the
Amazon Echo Alexa device.
b) From the point of view of an adult child caring for an
elderly parent, describe the Amazon Echo Alexa device.
c) From the point of view of a journalist, describe the Amazon
Echo Alexa device.
Tips
Some other ways to use
ChatGPT
Grammar examples
If you’re teaching languages you can ask
ChatGPT to come up with sentences which
demonstrate a specific grammar concept
you’re trying to explain.
Example: active and passive voice and tell it that the
topic should be about going to a concert and the
writing style should be informal.
WARNING: Do not tell it to write like Gen Z. Cringe.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
A fully integrated ChatGPT chatbot into Moodle can
enhance the learning experience by providing
instant feedback, answering student questions, and
facilitating interactive conversations.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Here are some activities teachers could rely on ChatGPT
to improve their Moodle courses:
Virtual Assistant: Teachers can integrate a virtual
assistant chatbot into Moodle, allowing students to ask
questions about course content, assignments, deadlines,
or any other relevant information.
It can provide automated responses based on pre-
defined answers or direct students to appropriate
resources.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Automated Feedback: ChatGPT can be used to
generate automated feedback on student
assignments or quizzes.
Teachers can create specific criteria and guidelines
for the chatbot to analyze student responses and
provide instant feedback, highlighting areas of
improvement or reinforcing correct answers.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Interactive Conversations: Teachers can design
interactive scenarios where students engage in
conversations with a chatbot representing a
particular character or role.
This activity can help simulate real-life situations and
foster language practice, critical thinking, or decision-
making skills.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Language Practice: If teaching a language course,
teachers can utilize ChatGPT to provide students with
additional language practice.
Students can engage in text-based conversations
with the chatbot, practicing vocabulary, grammar,
and sentence construction in a controlled
environment.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Knowledge Retrieval: ChatGPT can serve as a
knowledge repository, allowing students to access
course-related information, lecture summaries, or
study materials.
By querying the chatbot, students can quickly
retrieve relevant information and review course
content.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Discussion Forums: Teachers can integrate a chatbot
into Moodle's discussion forums to provide
automated responses to common questions or
facilitate discussions when human moderation is not
available.
The chatbot can assist in guiding the conversation,
providing additional resources, or summarizing key
points.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Assignment Submission and Feedback: While the
actual grading and assessment process requires
human involvement, teachers can use ChatGPT to
automate the initial feedback stage.
For example, a chatbot can analyze the submitted
assignments and provide preliminary feedback based
on predefined criteria or common mistakes.
The Future:
ChatGPT Fully Integrated into
Moodle
Content Recommendation: Teachers can leverage
ChatGPT to recommend additional learning resources
to students based on their interests, learning styles, or
performance.
The chatbot can understand students' preferences and
suggest relevant articles, videos, or online materials to
supplement their learning.
