- Summarize the district District Factor grouping I DFG is a way for NJ to compare districts with like socioeconmic status on statewide assessement.
- We have flown across country to share wtih you how Randolph Township Schools have incorporated the used wikis in education for the last year. We will share with you how we got started, where we are now and where we expect to be. We have a few practical applications to share with you whilie we speak about our journey to wikify education. One Word....Before we get started we have several images we would like to share. Sit back and take a few seconds to look at each one and try to generate a word or short phrase that all the pictures have in common.
- Ask for audience thoughts Validate collaboration
- The overriding theme for all of the pictures we chose was collaboration. A wiki is a tool that fosters collaboration. A wiki is an editable web page that you can create. By the end of this presentation you can have your own wiki! We chose to highlight wikis in Randolph, NJ as a way to get our teachers and students working in the Web 2.0 world collaboratively.
- This picture is a map of web 2.0 application icons. This illustration incorporates over a thousand and one collaborative tools available on the internet today, most of which are free. Web 2.0 is the 2nd generation internet and it facilitates collaboration - including tools such as blogs, podcasts, wikis, video conferencing etc. One of t he most popular wikis is Wikipedia. The Web we were introduced to in the 90s allowed us to retrieve information. Today's Web still affords us this and now also allows each of us to be authors within this virtual space.
- Please take a moment to read this quote by Marc Prensky. MarcPrensky coined the terms digital natives (young people) and digital immigrants (those born after the mid 1970s) Students are coming to us with different skill sets and different expectations for how they learn. (K story of what do you want to be for Halloween) Convincing teachers that there are new and exciting ways to share curriculum content takes time and patience. This is where collaborative tools assist in the evolution of techong and learning.
- We introduced the use of a wiki in an INFORMAL manner - KEPT IT SIMPLE - and LET IT EVOLVE NATURALLY. We started with an initial goal and encouraged users to explore on their own Understand that it is not the ONLY option Experiment with your own and share with othersWe identified people looking for a tool to facilitate sharing or a group project We built a small group of wiki users TURN KEY Make the users the spokes persons (model wikians) .
- Once we acquainted people with the wiki concept - SOME teachers and students did jump right in and start to develop their wiki sites to for sharing ideas, presenting projects, and for virtual meetings. Others - choose not to jump on board - they thought this Web 2.0 stuff might soon disappear :) Some of the users went beyond our expectations and found uses that we wouldn't have even thought of - for example one high school teacher used this tool as a site to place topics covered during class - even she didn't expect what evolved...student began posting class notes under the topics and included supporting Youtube videos. When it was time for the MidTerm, an EPIC STUDY GUIDE was started and students collaborated to share and clarify their understanding of the material they thought they might be assessed on.
- Finding a balance of how many to use, when to use them and appropriateness - it has to be the right tool and it's not the only tool. We had an enthusiastic teacher who shared her enthusiasm for this tool with a number of colleagues. Within one week classes across every discipline started using this tool with middle school students and the response, was, ANOTHER WIKI...Students were bombarded with group projects and multiple sites. We learned to create centralized portals and link wikis and resources to streamline the tools available to staff and students. Asking people to do something that may be uncomfortable will take time and tolerance -
- The digital immigrants need time to assimilate into the digital world. Provide professional development and support to wiki users and share other tools that work in conjuncton such as blogs and Google tools. Work in small groups to assist with signing on and the basics of editing - begin to use as one of the primary means of collaborating and communicating. Modeling is something we remind our teachers to use with students and administrators need to model as well. The use of teacher laptops as a tool for modeling.
- EVALUATE Evaluate teacher use of wiki (effectiveness and variety) - this can be done by an informal survey. Check student engagement utilizing the wiki tools to check the the edits made and the times students visit the wiki.Monitor ethical use of the wiki by reviewing the history feature on the wiki.
- The wikis that we have chosen to share with you - we have catagorized into the three areas you see here This is just a snapshot of the applications of this collaborative tool in our schools.
- Discuss examples
