    • Late 1960s - early 1970s. 4-H moves into urban areas, bringing a \'can do\' spirit and sense of self worth to inner city youngsters. Creation of EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program) in 1969 leads to EFNEP-4-H, which brings fun and knowledge about healthy foods to low resource youngsters and, consequently, to their parents.
    • Clear Lake Sailors 4-H ClubLeaders of the Clear Lake Sailors through the years have been: Telva Frederick(Mrs. Bob); Betty Erickson (Mrs. Virgil); Mary Olthoff (Mrs. Bob); Joan Krumm (Mrs. Bob); Ruby Jacobson (Mrs. Victor); Dorthea Stark (Mrs. Orlin); Hortenza vold (Mrs. Bob); Jann Arends (Mrs. Jeff; and Jan Cottington (Mrs. Nyle).Activities of the club have been:A chili Supper – wearing our green and white 4-H dresses and white aprons we had made as a group, we served the public and made money enabling us go to 4-H camp each year.Mother’s Tea – was held in May to honor our mothers. Talents of the club were shared for the program.Dad’s Nite - was held during the summer. The girls and their dads had a picnic in the park after which they played ball – Dads vs girls. The girls usually won.Watermelon Day – The club always fixed up a float for the parade in Stanhope.Harvest Sunday – We set up a food display in a different church in town each year. The food then was given to a needy family in town.Christmas – The club made candy and cookies. They went caroling for the sick and the elderly in town giving them a box of goodies. We have also toured the city of Des Moines with our extra club money. We toured the Art Center, Salisbury House, and the Police Station, then ate out at a fancy restaurant. We had sledding parties with the Clear Lake Chaps sliding down near Bert Anderson’s hill NW of Stanhope. Each month we had a club Better Grooming Contest. The girls would choose who looked the nicest – hair, nails, clothes pressed, etc. Each girl gave one talk and one demonstration each year. At one time our club had 26 members.Major Honors: Nancy Erickson – County President, IFYE – six month visit to India; Camp Miniwanca four times. Pam Frederick and Jackie Frederick – State demonstration on 鄭ltering Patterns received an excellent award (top state). Also both were county officers.Source: Hamilton County History, 1986.
